STO’s Onion Shipment Arrives Amid Weather-Induced Shortage, MVR 15 per Kg
The State Trading Organisation’s (STO) latest shipment of onions has entered the market, addressing the shortage caused by recent adverse weather conditions that disrupted imports.
STO stated that the shipment aims to ease the difficulties faced by the public due to the disruption in supply and to stabilise market prices.
The shortage had driven retail prices up sharply, with onions selling at MVR 70 to MVR 75 per kilogram in some areas, and some shops running out of onions from their stock completely. The hiked price is nearly five times higher than the usual range of MVR 15 to MVR 20 per kilogram.
Despite last week’s price surge, onions are now available at pre-shortage rates. STO is selling onions at MVR 15 per kilogram through its People’s Choice outlet and Wholesale Centre.
While STO typically imports perishable items around Ramadan, the company arranged this off-season shipment in response to the recent challenges in maintaining supply.
