The number of Maldivian import containers stranded at Colombo Port has been reduced from around 4,000 to 1,741 following coordinated efforts to clear the backlog, according to Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed.

The containers had remained in Colombo due to the impact of the ongoing war and related logistical challenges. Earlier in the week, there were approximately 4,200 containers pending clearance, while businesses had requested the urgent release of 80 containers.

Government agencies have been working closely with traders to expedite the movement of goods, resulting in a steady reduction in the backlog. Forty-three days into the conflict, the remaining number of containers awaiting shipment to the Maldives has dropped significantly.

Imports have increased by 19 per cent compared to the same period last year, supported in part by an increase in airline flights, which has made it easier to transport goods through air freight and cargo services.

The minister has also been engaging directly with businesses affected by the delays, particularly those importing essential goods. Priority had previously been given to key food items, including milk and sunflower oil, in an effort to prevent shortages in the domestic market.
