Police have arrested Sunny Umar at Velana International Airport in connection with allegations of sexually assaulting minors.
According to the Maldives Police Service, he was first summoned to the Family and Child Protection (FCP) Department for questioning when he returned from abroad yesterday, but was released. Police later detained him from the airport, as he was about to board a flight abroad. They confirmed the arrest but did not provide further details. Local media reports stated that he was taken into custody as he was about to board a flight to Sri Lanka.
The Travel Guys — the company where Umar previously held leadership roles — had previously released a statement announcing that it has removed him from all positions following the emergence of the allegations. In a statement, the company said its board had decided to internally transfer all shares linked to Umar and dismiss him from leadership. It also clarified that Travelution Media, operated under the company, has been run solely by its internal core team and that Umar had no role in directing it.
The company said it rejects all forms of abuse and misconduct and emphasised that the safety of individuals remains a core value. Despite the developments, it stated that daily operations will continue.
Police have confirmed they are investigating the allegations but have not disclosed further information.
