Support for former President Yameen and current President Solih is on the rise in the Maldives, according to the most recent monthly poll conducted by the Baani Centre for International Policy. Yameen, currently incarcerated, saw an increase in voter support from 10% in June to 18% in July. President Solih also experienced an upward trend, with his support climbing from 15% to 19% over the same period.

However, with a stubbornly high percentage of undecided voters, the outcome of a potential election remains unpredictable. A significant 47% of those polled in July remained uncertain of their voting intention, only slightly down from 52% in June.

In terms of political parties, the opposition Progressive Party of the Maldives observed a surge in support from 12% in June to 18% in July, while the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party retained the most popularity, with support rising from 17% to 22%. Meanwhile, the newly registered The Democrats managed to attract 2% of voter support.

While the Elections Commission is due to announce the candidate list in early August, it remains to be seen if the percentage of undecided voters will decrease. As per the poll’s results, a 95% confidence level and a 5% margin of error suggest the findings are representative of the broader Maldivian voting population.

Baani will continue its monthly polling activities until the September presidential elections. Detailed results can be found at https://baanicentre.org/research/.
