The construction of the planned international-standard surfing stadium at Raalhugandu in Malé has been delayed following a significant redesign, according to Abdulla Rafiu, Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation.

The project, which was initially designed as a pre-fabricated structure, will now be built using concrete and expanded by an additional 50 feet. The minister stated that the revision was necessary to ensure the long-term durability and viability of the facility.

The decision to alter the design was made after consultations with the Surfing Association of Maldives and the Maldives Bodyboarding Association, alongside technical assessments.

The redesign was largely influenced by the harsh marine conditions at Raalhugandu. Authorities determined that a pre-fabricated structure would be more vulnerable to salt exposure and require higher maintenance costs, leading to the decision to adopt a more durable concrete construction.

Despite the delay, the overall project timeline remains unchanged. The contract has been awarded to Rotime Engineering and Technology Corporation, with whom an agreement was signed on 18 April 2024. The minister stated that revised design drawings have been completed and expressed confidence that construction work will begin before the end of the month.

The redevelopment of the Raalhugandu area began last November with the demolition of the Bridge View platform and forms part of broader efforts to position the Maldives as a venue for international surfing events.

The planned stadium is expected to include spectator seating, a rostrum, media and commentary areas, a camera deck, observation spaces, a gym, a multipurpose hall and conference facilities. The project is intended to support the growth of water sports in the country and provide infrastructure capable of hosting international competitions.
