Suspect Arrested for Threatening Mother and Sister Over Money
The Criminal Court has ordered the arrest of a 32-year-old man from Malé, Mohamed Shafeeq, suspected of threatening his mother and sister with a knife for money.
Shafeeq was remanded in custody for seven days following the court’s decision yesterday. Police reported discovering two knives in his room during their investigation. The incident is part of a troubling trend involving parental abuse for financial demands.

On 22 October, another individual was arrested for threatening and assaulting their mother over money. Last Thursday, police apprehended another suspect accused of threatening, assaulting, and coercing money from their mother.
Suspect in Sinamalé Bridge Hit-and-Run Arrested
Police have arrested a 22-year-old man, Shunaan Mohamed Shakir, from B. Eydhafushi, in connection with a hit-and-run incident on the Sinamalé Bridge highway.
The Criminal Court has remanded Shunaan in custody for five days while the investigation continues. The accident occurred on Friday afternoon when a speeding motorbike, allegedly driven by Shunaan, collided with another motorbike during an illegal overtaking manoeuvre.
The two victims on the second motorbike, a Maldivian man and woman, were transported to Hulhumalé Hospital for treatment. The man has since been discharged, but the woman remains hospitalised. Authorities stated that Shunaan fled the scene immediately after the collision.
Suspects Remanded for Car Arson Case in Malé
Two men have been remanded in custody for 15 days by the Criminal Court in connection with an alleged car arson incident in Malé.
Police arrested Khalid Mahmoodh, 35, and Hassan Naseem, 31, under court orders. The incident occurred last Monday evening when a car parked in the SinaMalé area on Buruzu Magu was set on fire. A video circulating on social media shows the front of the vehicle ablaze. The Maldives National Defence Force’s Fire and Rescue team extinguished the fire before it could spread further.
No additional details have been disclosed as investigations continue.
