Organised by Ministry of Social and Family Development, the one-day workshop “Taking the lead – Women in Politics” concluded yesterday in Male’ City.
According to a press release issued today by the Ministry, the workshop aimed to empower and encourage women interested in the field of politics. It was held in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Elections Commission of Maldives and the NGO’s Women in Tech and Hope for Women.
Speakers at the workshop included Deputy Minister Aminath Namza who discussed communication tools for successful female politicians, and Ahmed Muaz from the Elections Commission who talked on the topic of democratic governance and human rights. Talks were also given by Women in Tech’s Nahza Ibrahim who spoke about networking and relationship-building, as well as Umar Maavi Ali from UNDP who spoke about the importance of public participation in a nation’s law-making process.
According to the Ministry, there are several challenges inhibiting women from participating in politics, including religious, cultural, social and economic factors. Hence, the workshop focused on addressing these challenges and providing educational avenues to overcome these barriers.
Citing studies that show increased female representation in parliament had a positive impact on addressing women’s issues, and underscoring the importance of equal participation in democratic governance, the ministry reassures its commitment to empowering female representation in Maldivian politics.
