Health Minister Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim revealed that 14 children with thalassaemia have been sent abroad this year for bone marrow transplants.
The update came during the launch of the Thalassaemia Master Plan, aimed at enhancing care for patients.
The government’s efforts over the past 10 months include screening children with thalassaemia, raising awareness in schools, and establishing blood banks in four locations. Minister Nazim also highlighted plans to provide free transplants, particularly in Maldives, and aims to send children abroad for treatment annually.
As part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s promise, a Thalassaemia and Haemoglobinopathies Hospital is being developed in Hulhumale, with construction formalised through an agreement with a Malaysian firm. Forty children with family donor matches have been identified and are awaiting transplants.

The country has 943 registered thalassaemia patients, and the only permanent treatment is a bone marrow transplant.
