Thalassemia Center to Be Established in Hulhumale’, Says Health Minister

Health Minister Ahmed Naseem has announced the construction of a Thalassemia Centre in Hulhumale’ during a ceremony at the Health Ministry, yesterday, where five individuals opting for overseas bone marrow transplants received certificates.

Addressing the gathering, he emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring easy access to treatment and medication for thalassemia children. He underscored the persistent efforts being made to achieve this objective.

The new Thalassemia Centre is expected to enhance services for thalassemia patients while alleviating space constraints. Additionally, the establishment of a National Blood Bank service within the facility will extend its services to all health service centers across the country.

Minister Naseem also stressed the importance of bone marrow transplant services and their priority status. Extensive research has been conducted in various countries to ensure the success of these treatments. Minister Naseem expressed hope that this year would mark significant progress in providing effective treatment to bone marrow transplant recipients.

Bone marrow transplant is a critical component of thalassemia treatment, requiring long-term care and specialised attention for the affected children.

Presently, there are 650 children in the Maldives receiving treatment for thalassemia.
