Thilamale’ Bridge construction achieves 70 per cent progress

The Thilamale’ Bridge project has reached 70 per cent completion, with substantial progress now visible across the construction site.

Spanning 6.7 kilometres, the project comprises a network of bridges and causeways linking Malé, Villimalé, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi. The development is expected to significantly enhance transportation links and strengthen economic integration within the Greater Malé region.

Construction efforts are currently centred on casting and installing deck segments that connect the bridge’s pillars. Of the required 1,222 segments, 80 per cent have been cast, while 46 per cent have been installed. On the western side of Malé, the structure of the bridge is becoming increasingly prominent, providing a clear indication of the project’s scale and progress.

Work on the causeways in Villimalé and Gulhifalhu is advancing swiftly, with sub-base preparation underway ahead of tarmacking. Shore protection measures, including revetment and culvert installation, are also in progress to safeguard the infrastructure against long-term marine exposure.

The Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, has stated that the section of the bridge connecting to Villimalé is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The entire project is projected for completion in 2027.

Although the project experienced initial delays due to contractual changes under the previous administration, the government is now working in close coordination with the Indian government and the project contractor to expedite implementation.
