Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has stated that 2024 has seen the highest-ever contributions to the Zakat Fund in Maldivian history.

Speaking on a PSM News programme, Dr. Shaheem revealed that the fund has so far collected over MVR 89.6 million, with the target set to reach MVR 100.3 million by the end of the year.

During the interview, the Minister highlighted the need to further develop the Zakat Fund to enhance its sustainability and impact. The fund plays a critical role in providing support for the poor and needy, offering educational assistance, and covering medical expenses.

Dr. Shaheem also outlined the government’s plans to expand the fund’s scope under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration. These include investing in Sharia-compliant ventures to ensure the fund’s growth and wider benefits for the community, particularly for parents and families requiring assistance.

To oversee and optimise these efforts, the government has established the Zakat House of Maldives. This dedicated agency manages the collection and distribution of Zakat, maintains a register of eligible recipients in collaboration with relevant authorities, and works on developing the fund to secure sustainable benefits for future generations.

This record-breaking contribution reflects the deep commitment of Maldivians to fulfilling their religious obligations and underscores the government’s active initiatives to promote social welfare.
