Mohamed Tholal, the Secretary General of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), has left the party.
This decision follows an unannounced press conference held at the PPM headquarters on Tuesday night, where PPM senators Mohamed Maleeh Jamal and Abbas Adil Riza revealed changes to the party’s leadership structure.
During the press conference, Adil announced that former President Yameen had appointed a 13-member steering committee to oversee the party’s operations. Adil also stated that Tholal was no longer involved in the day-to-day operations of the party.
The situation escalated when Tholal was appointed as the Sports Commissioner on Tuesday—a position that inherently prohibits involvement in the management of a political party.
These developments on Tuesday have sparked speculations of differences between former President Yameen and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. President Muizzu, who was elected as the leader of the People’s National Congress (PNC), PPM’s coalition partner, following his victory in the presidential election in September.
