Thousands Stopped in Male’ as Police Ramp Up Traffic Enforcement

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) have checked on over 35,000 vehicles in the pas 11 months as part of an intensified effort to address traffic violations, reckless driving, and unlicensed operation on the roads.
Statistics released by the Male’ Frontline Policing Department show a clear focus on enforcement, with officers inspecting 3,878 cars and 31,857 motorcycles. Advisories were issued to more than 30,000 drivers, while over 6,500 vehicles were towed for various violations.

Police say the increased visibility and roadside operations are designed to curb unsafe behaviour, especially among motorcyclists, who continue to account for the majority of recorded offences. Over 1,000 riders were found operating vehicles without a valid licence, and 154 were stopped for reckless riding.
Prioritising Road Safety
Officers have adopted a dual approach, focusing on both behavioural reform through verbal advisories and decisive enforcement where warranted. Nearly 6,800 vehicles were towed either for traffic violations or illegal parking, demonstrating a clear intent to improve road discipline across the city.
Sustained Patrol Presence
The figures also highlight a strong street-level presence:
- 2,181 vehicle checkpoints conducted
- 262,767 location checks carried out
- 2,881 hours of foot patrols recorded
- 21 traffic management points currently active across Male’
Patrol units conducted foot rounds averaging 24 minutes each, contributing to both traffic oversight and public reassurance.
