Three Arrested in Maldives Drug Trafficking Case, Including Pakistani National

The Maldives Police Service have submitted a request to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) for criminal charges against three individuals, including a Pakistani national, who were arrested on suspicion of smuggling drugs into the country.

  • Ahmed Affan, 25, from Narugis Villa, HDh. Kumundhoo
  • Shahil Mohamed, 40, from V. Sinamale’ 4 03-3
  • Molvi Mohamed Haroon, 49, from Pakistan

According to police reports, the three individuals allegedly trafficked drugs into the Maldives on a flight that arrived at Velana International Airport (VIA) at 05:10 am on August 24. The PGO accepted the case for prosecution on Tuesday, September 17. The police have not disclosed the type or quantity of drugs involved in the case.

Two Individuals Wanted for Questioning in Drug Investigation

In a separate development, the police have issued a public summons for two individuals wanted for questioning in a drug investigation led by the Drug Enforcement agency.

The individuals are:

  • Hussain Solih, 40, from Everest, S. Feydhoo
  • Ahmed Zahid, 36, from Dhanmaru, Sh. Foakaidhoo

The police stated that both individuals are suspects in an ongoing investigation and are sought for questioning. Their current whereabouts are unknown, which has prevented the police from delivering the summons in person. They have been instructed to present themselves for questioning by 10:00 am on September 30 at the Sergeant Adam Haleem Criminal Investigation Building.

Police Make No Arrests After Three Assaults in Two Days 

Police in the Maldives have yet to make any arrests following three separate assaults that occurred over the last two days.

The first incident took place in the southern city of Addu on Friday morning, followed by an attack in Hulhumale’ early Saturday, and a third in Male’ City on Saturday afternoon.

A police spokesperson confirmed on Sunday morning that no arrests have been made in connection with any of the incidents.

On Friday, a man was attacked in his home in the Hithadhoo district of Addu. He received treatment at the Addu Equatorial Hospital and was discharged the same day. The police have not disclosed the extent of his injuries or further details about the attack. However, an unverified social media post suggests that masked men entered the victim’s home and assaulted him, accompanied by photos allegedly showing him bleeding and being taken to an ambulance.

On Saturday, the police reported an assault on a male expatriate in Hulhumale’ at around 03:50 am. The victim sustained head injuries and was initially treated at the Hulhumale’ Hospital before being transferred to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for a consultation with a neurosurgeon.

The third incident occurred in Male’ City, reported to the police at approximately 06:40 pm. In this case, the assailants entered the victim’s home, a Maldivian man, and attacked him. He was also taken to IGMH for treatment.

In recent weeks, there has been a noted increase in cases of assault and armed robbery in the Maldives, particularly in the capital, Male’.
