Three Bills Submitted to President’s Office for Parliamentary Consideration

The Attorney Generals Office (AG) has forwarded three bills to the President’s Office for submission to Parliament.
The trio of legislative proposals comprises the Zakat Bill, the Marine Spatial Planning Bill, and a proposed amendment to the Drugs Act.
The follows expressed concerns from the AG office regarding the backlog of essential bills awaiting parliamentary attention across various sectors. The AG office revealed that a total of 30 bills have been submitted to Parliament at different stages.
These encompass legislation addressing diverse social sectors and amendments aimed at fortifying the justice system in Maldives.
Providing insights into the legislative landscape, the AG office disclosed that twenty bills are currently undergoing deliberation in various parliamentary committees, while two bills are in the preliminary debate phase.
Additionally, three bills have reached the first reading stage, and five are currently in the Parliament’s office awaiting further action.
Highlighting the broader context, the AG office underscored that, since November 17, 2018, the government has introduced a total of 153 bills in Parliament. Of these, 120 bills have successfully navigated the parliamentary process.
