Three Senior Police Officials Apply for CP Position
Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen, Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikry, and South Police Commander Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shameem.
Three high-ranking officials from the Maldives Police Service, including the acting Commissioner of Police, have formally applied for the post of Commissioner of Police.
The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology confirmed that three candidates had submitted their applications by the noon deadline on Monday. The applicants are Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen, Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikry, and South Police Commander Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shameem.
All three candidates will be vetted by the Police Board, after which the President will appoint the new Commissioner of Police based on a recommendation from the Defence Minister.
The post became vacant on 26 April, following the resignation of Commissioner Ibrahim Shujau. His departure came in the wake of serial protests in Malé City over allegations of a police cover-up in the investigation into a case involving a young woman found injured on the rooftop of a warehouse on 18 April, after reportedly falling from the ninth floor of the adjacent building.
In the immediate aftermath of Shujau’s resignation, Farhad Fikry was named acting commissioner. However, less than an hour later, the position was reassigned to Ismail Naveen.
