The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has announced plans to establish a cultural centre on Thulhaadhoo, Baa Atoll, to serve as a national hub for the preservation and teaching of traditional Maldivian arts and crafts.
The USD 1.58 million project has been awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) and is scheduled for completion within 420 days. The facility will offer structured training in disciplines such as lacquer work, weaving, carpentry, and general handicrafts.
The agreement for the development was finalised during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visit to Baa Atoll, where he met with Thulhaadhoo residents, the island council, and the Women’s Development Committee. MTCC was formally tasked with carrying out the project during these engagements.
According to the ministry, the initiative aligns with the president’s broader policy objectives to foster a creative economy, boost national productivity, and safeguard cultural heritage. The two-storey centre will also feature a café and leisure spaces designed for both participants and visitors.
The contract was signed by State Minister Abdulla Shiyaz on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and by MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudee on behalf of the contracting company.
