Thulusdhoo Council has allocated 44 land plots to facilitate the relocation of residents from the sparsely populated island of Raiymandhoo in Meemu Atoll to Kaafu Thulusdhoo.

According to the Ministry of Housing, the government has decided to relocate the residents of Raiymandhoo to Thulusdhoo. The Ministry confirmed that Thulusdhoo Council has formally notified the authorities of the availability of the 44 plots required to proceed with the relocation process. Preliminary work necessary for the implementation of the project has already commenced, and the Raiymandhoo Council has been informed accordingly.

Raiymandhoo has a registered population of 240; however, only around 80 residents currently live on the island. Community representatives have previously highlighted the difficulties associated with maintaining essential services and sustainable living conditions due to the declining population.

Residents have campaigned for relocation, citing concerns over limited access to basic services and long-term viability. These concerns were conveyed to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to the island on 22 September last year.

During the visit, the President indicated that the government would explore the feasibility of a dedicated housing project if the community formally expressed its wish to relocate. He requested confirmation that at least 80 per cent of the population supported the move.

Residents of Raiymandhoo requested relocation to an island within proximity of the Greater Malé area. The President stated that, should the decision be finalised, the relocation process would be completed within one year from the commencement of housing construction. The proposal includes the construction of three-bedroom houses for each registered household from Raiymandhoo and a revision of the current relocation allowance of MVR 50,000 provided to migrating families.

Raiymandhoo is among several small-population islands that have petitioned the government for relocation in recent years, following similar initiatives undertaken in the past.
