Tourism Sector Expands With Nearly 3,000 New Beds Added This Year, Says Ministry
The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has reported that the Maldives’ tourism sector has expanded this year, with nearly 3,000 new beds added in 2025 as accommodation capacity and international arrivals continue to rise.
According to government data, 2,987 beds have been introduced so far this year, bringing the total number of operational beds to 66,235. This represents a notable rise from the 63,248 beds available at the end of 2024 and marks the first time the country’s capacity has exceeded 66,000.
The accommodation capacity is distributed across four main categories. Resorts account for 44,247 beds, guesthouses provide 16,068, safaris contribute 3,322, and hotels offer a further 2,598. Nationwide, 1,295 tourism facilities are currently operational, comprising 176 resorts, 935 guesthouses, 168 safaris and 16 hotels.
The expansion in capacity has accompanied a continued surge in visitor numbers. Ministry statistics show that 1,897,840 tourists have arrived in the Maldives so far this year, an increase of 9.8 percent compared with the same period in 2024, when arrivals totalled 1,728,045.
The government aims to attract 2.3 million tourists in 2025. With 1.8 million arrivals already recorded, the country requires a further 402,160 visitors to meet this target. Current trends, including an average of more than 6,000 daily arrivals, indicate that the goal remains within reach.
