A tourist was arrested last night at Velana International Airport after airport security discovered bullets in his possession.
According to a police media official, the individual was taken before the court and has been remanded in custody for six days while further investigations are carried out. Authorities have not disclosed additional information regarding the incident, as the case remains under investigation.
Preliminary reports suggest that the suspect is a Colombian national who had entered the Maldives on a tourist visa.
This incident follows a number of previous cases in which travellers have been detained and prosecuted for carrying ammunition, which is strictly prohibited under Maldivian law.
