Tradenet Maldives Corporation Limited has reported significant progress in efforts to digitise services provided by local councils, with agreements already signed with nine councils to date.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader digital overhaul, branded as ‘Maldives 2.0’, which is designed as a multi-institutional effort to modernise state operations through technology. Tradenet, which is spearheading the programme, is working to integrate government agencies into its One Gov online platform, developed as a single access point for public services.
According to the company, work is now underway to connect the services of the nine councils to the system. In addition, 40 more councils have expressed interest in adopting the One Gov platform, with the overall goal of digitising all councils by 2027. Tradenet has stated that it has the capacity to complete the initiative and the ability to expand further if required.
The government has said that ‘Maldives 2.0’ is expected to deliver wide-ranging benefits, not only in streamlining governance and reducing bureaucratic inefficiencies but also in creating a more attractive environment for investment. Officials have emphasised that the reforms are aimed at improving transparency, curbing corruption, and accelerating the delivery of public services.
Over the next three years, new digital tools are planned to be introduced to strengthen service delivery and enhance economic stability. The government has highlighted that the success of the initiative will depend on collective cooperation across institutions and communities.
