Traffic Accidents Rise 29 Percent in April Compared to Last Year

Traffic accidents increased by 29 percent in April compared to the same period last year, according to statistics released by the Maldives Police Service.

Police statistics showed that 994 cases were reported in April 2026, with traffic accidents accounting for the highest number of incidents recorded during the month. A total of 275 traffic accidents were reported in April 2026, compared to 213 accidents during the same month in 2025.

Despite the year-on-year increase, the number of traffic accidents declined compared to March, when police recorded 270 accidents.

The statistics also showed that theft cases were the second highest category reported in April, with 266 cases, followed by 185 drug-related cases. Police also received reports of 85 lost items, 47 assault cases and 45 vandalism cases during the month.

In addition, 25 sexual offence cases, 27 domestic violence cases, 16 embezzlement cases and 19 robbery cases were reported in April. Two cases related to counterfeit and forgery were also recorded.

Police statistics further showed that 3,076 traffic accidents were reported across the country last year. So far this year, 1,099 accidents have already been recorded, despite the year not yet reaching its halfway point.

According to police, traffic accidents are most frequently reported in Malé, particularly in the areas around the Sinamalé Bridge and the Hulhumalé Highway.
