Traffic Accidents Rise in Malé Area During First Week of Ramadan

Traffic accidents in the Malé area increased during the first week of Ramadan compared to the same period last year, according to figures released by the Maldives Police Service.
Police recorded 107 accidents between 18 and 24 February, marking the first week of Ramadan this year. During the corresponding week last year, 90 accidents were reported, indicating a notable rise in incidents.
The highest number of accidents this year was recorded on Majeedhee Magu, where 14 incidents occurred. Sinamalé Bridge and the adjoining highway accounted for 17 accidents, making them among the most affected and congested routes in the capital.
Ameenee Magu registered eight accidents during the same period. Hulhumalé Phase I recorded 14 incidents, while Hulhumalé Phase II saw 16 accidents. A further nine cases were reported across other locations.
The lowest number of incidents was recorded near the Local Market area, where two accidents occurred.
Police have urged motorists to reduce speed, remain attentive and exercise patience while driving during Ramadan in order to minimise further accidents.
