Transparency Maldives Condemns LGA’s Interference in Council Statement
The anti-corruption NGO, Transparency Maldives, has strongly criticized the Local Government Authority (LGA) for its directive to retract a statement issued by the N. Kendhikulhudhoo Council regarding the abuse of state resources. The Council’s statement, released on 2 March 2024, highlighted concerns about the President’s misuse of government assets to campaign for ruling party candidates for the upcoming parliamentary elections during an official visit to the atoll.
According to the NGO, the move by the LGA has raised concerns about political interference in local governance, particularly in light of the Decentralisation Act which aims to empower local councils with autonomy in addressing public concerns. Transparency Maldives emphasized the importance of allowing local councils to operate independently without fear of censorship or retribution.
Transparent Maldives states in a press release published yesterday, several instances of state resource abuse was observed during recent official visits to various atolls by the President, including the announcement of new development projects, active campaigning for ruling coalition candidates by state officials, and promises to increase salaries and allowances for civil service staff through parliamentary means.
Stressing the importance of creating an environment conducive to free and fair elections, the NGO called on overseeing bodies like the LGA to support local councils in promoting good governance.
Further, Transparency Maldives welcomed the decision by the Decentralization Committee of the Parliament to investigate the actions of the LGA and urged the Parliamentary Committee to hold the LGA accountable. They emphasized the need for councils to function without intimidation or interference.
The NGO called upon relevant authorities to investigate allegations of state resource abuse and ensure accountability and integrity in the electoral process. They reminded public institutions of their duty to uphold democratic principles and the rule of law, condemning any attempts to manipulate or undermine the electoral process.
Following the statement released by the N.Kendhikulhudhoo Council, LGA stated that local councils do not have the authority to issue statements concerning the President’s visits. Consequently, the council’s press release was deemed invalid and ordered to be retracted.
