The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced that it is engaged in high-level discussions to attract additional airlines to the Maldives in response to ongoing unrest in the Middle East and the resulting disruption to international airspace.

In a statement, the Ministry confirmed that it is closely monitoring developments in the Middle East, particularly restrictions affecting regional airspace due to the conflict. It noted that flights originating from or transiting through the Middle East play a critical role in supporting tourist arrivals to the Maldives.

The Ministry outlined a proactive approach aimed at minimising disruption, stating that it is working in collaboration with major airline partners and relevant international agencies to address potential travel challenges.

The primary objective of these efforts is to reduce inconvenience for tourists travelling to the Maldives and Maldivians travelling abroad. The Ministry stated that while some airlines have adjusted their schedules in response to the situation, others continue to operate as normal.

As part of efforts to build an alternative network to offset disruptions, the Ministry revealed that it is in advanced discussions to attract additional airlines from key alternative markets, including Southeast Asia, East Asia and India.

Reaffirming its commitment to the tourism sector, the Ministry stated that the Maldives will continue to welcome visitors from around the world while maintaining high standards of aviation safety and hospitality.
