The Communications Authority of Maldives (CAM) has unblocked two news websites that were previously shut down by the government on December 22.

The affected websites, Kurusee and Dhiyavaru, had faced restrictions following orders from the police.

Despite functioning as news websites, neither Kurusee nor Dhiyavaru is officially registered as media outlets. The sites had recently published articles containing significant allegations against the government.

CAM, which oversees internet service providers, currently operates under the Ministry of Cities, Local Governance, and Public Works. The move to block the news websites had triggered concerns and criticism, with many viewing it as a potential violation of the constitutional right to freedom of expression.

In response to the backlash, the government emphasised its commitment to not taking action against any registered news outlets.

The unblocking of the two websites comes amid discussions surrounding the delicate balance between government actions and the preservation of freedom of expression within the Maldives.
