Two Brothers Arrested in Malé on Suspicion of Drug Offences

Two brothers have been arrested in Malé on suspicion of possessing, using, and selling drugs.

The Maldives Police Service identified the suspects as Ibrahim Shareef, aged 41, and Hamza Shareef, aged 44, both from G. Semitone. The arrests took place on Saturday during a joint operation carried out by the Drug Enforcement Department and the Counter Narcotic Intelligence unit.

According to police, a total of 90.54 grams of substances suspected to be drugs were found on the brothers when they were searched at the time of arrest.

Both individuals have been remanded in custody for 15 days following a court hearing. The Drug Enforcement Department is continuing its investigation into the case.

Previous drug operations in the Maldives have also resulted in arrests involving individuals from the same family. Drug-related offences continue to represent one of the country’s most significant social challenges.
