President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said the United Nations (UN) played a vital role in the Maldives’ development, especially in advancing healthcare, education, and human rights.
He said this in the message he issued yesterday to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Maldives becoming a member nation of the UN.
Reflecting on the country’s entry into the UN six decades ago, the President described it as a moment of hope and ambition, and a step towards international cooperation. He noted that the anniversary symbolises both a historic decision and a long-standing partnership between the Maldives and the UN.
President Muizzu highlighted the Maldives’ active engagement within the organisation, crediting it with supporting the country’s development in healthcare, education, governance, and human rights. He added that the nation’s participation demonstrates how small states can contribute meaningfully to peace, justice, and sustainability, citing the Maldives’ leadership on climate action and efforts to amplify the voices of Small Island Developing States.
The President also called for reform within the UN, urging the organisation to evolve to meet emerging global challenges and maintain trust through meaningful action, citing ongoing crises in Gaza as an example.
Concluding his message, President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to building a more just, inclusive, and sustainable world.
