Un’goofaaru Among Seven Urban Centres Chosen as Key Development Hub, Says Muizzu

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has outlined the development of seven specific regions as urban centers intended to benefit a large number of citizens, and identified Un’goofaaru among these seven urban centers slated for development by the Administration. He made these remarks while speaking with residents of Un’goofaaru Island yesterday morning.

Speaking at the gathering, the President outlined the Administration’s plans to establish seven urban centers across the country as part of its mid-term and long-term development goals. These development goals entail integrated development zones intended for the northernmost and southernmost regions, each comprising four atolls, in addition to the seven specialised urban centers.

President Dr Muizzu further highlighted the developmental requests put forth by the island council, expressing the Administration’s commitment to permanently resolving housing issues, promoting economic growth, and introducing borrower-friendly loan schemes. He also discussed efforts to provide social housing and acknowledged the community’s needs for an improved sports sector, urban and social development, and other vital sectors. The President assured that these needs would be prioritised.

Meeting with Council and WDC

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu endeavours to implement maximum development initiatives proposed by the Un’goofaaru Council by the end of the year. This commitment was expressed during his meeting with the R. Un’goofaaru Council and the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) yesterdat, at the Secretariat of Un’goofaaru Council.

During the meeting, the Council highlighted the importance of a housing project, coastal preservation, the prompt completion of the school’s eight classrooms and multipurpose hall, and the construction of an additional 16 classrooms. They also requested jurisdiction over Un’gulu Island for economic purposes, advocated for RTL ferry services, and highlighted the necessity of developing a commercial port in Un’goofaaru. Members also requested the acceleration of football field establishment and other socio-economic development needs on the island.

During the meeting, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) emphasised the need for a handball court and swimming track.

President Dr Muizzu assured that the administration would address the concerns brought forth by the Council.

Un’goofaaru marks the President’s third destination on his tour of several North and South Maalhosmadulu Atoll islands.
