The recent tidal flooding in the Male’ area is linked to the king tide and a surge in swell waves and the Maldives Police Service has also strongly advised citizens to exercise extreme care when approaching coastal areas, particularly during peak tide hours.
As per the MMS weather forecast dated 1st August 2023, the nation was alerted to the possibility of tidal flooding due to the king tide’s impact. These concerns were further exacerbated by various local factors, including disturbances in wind patterns, ocean currents, and an increase in wave period.

These combined forces led to the forceful lashing of 6 to 8 feet swell waves along the shores of several islands within the southern and central atolls, notably including the Greater Male area.
This event transpired during the peak tide hours on the 5th of August, coinciding with the occurrence of a Supermoon a mere four days prior.
While the prevailing circumstances are underscored by the prominence of swell and tidal waves, the weather forecast for August 2023 projects a distinct pattern. MMS further wrote in their statement that most areas of the country are anticipated to experience below-average rainfall, with a slight exception for the northern atolls, where rainfall may be marginally above the average.
Additionally, temperatures are expected to register a slightly higher than normal reading across the expanse of the Maldives.
