The government has begun collecting data for an Urban Mobility Survey aimed at addressing traffic congestion, strengthening the city’s transport system and improving accessibility for pedestrians.

According to the council, the survey is intended to provide a better understanding of current traffic conditions and identify practical solutions to the transport challenges faced by residents.

The study is being conducted jointly by the Malé City Council and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) under an initiative led by Malé City Mayor Adam Azim. The council said UNESCAP is funding the project.

The survey examines vehicle ownership among residents, travel patterns between locations and the challenges within the existing transport system. The findings are expected to support efforts to reduce congestion and develop a more efficient and accessible urban mobility network.

As part of the data collection phase, 20 staff members from the council’s Community Engagement Unit visited more than 1,000 households across the Greater Malé region, including Malé, Hulhumalé and Vilimalé.

The council has scheduled a stakeholder meeting on 20 and 21 July at Meeruma Hotel to discuss the findings of the study and the next steps for improving urban mobility in the capital region.
