Urbanco has introduced a policy aimed at utilising vacant spaces surrounding residential flats, which includes designating parking spaces and closing vehicular access to certain courtyard areas.

This new approach aims to empower the local community, granting them decision-making authority over these vacant spaces, according to Urbanco.

Whether these areas will serve as gathering spots for residents, playgrounds for children, exercise zones, or sites for tree planting will be determined by the community itself.

Abdulla Firag, the Assistant Director of Urbanco, noted that previously, trees were planted haphazardly within the residential complexes, without a formal guideline. The policy now permits tree planting, but with specific regulations.

Trees are allowed in Phase I communities, while potted plants are permissible in both Phase I and Phase II communities.

Urbanco will promptly address any issues caused by trees in these spaces and if necessary, they may be relocated to a designated park in Hulhumale, provided that the property owner consents.

Certain activities are explicitly prohibited in these vacant spaces, such as warehousing, storing combustible materials, and using them as garbage storage areas. This policy has been made available to the public.
