The government has confirmed that USD 18 million was spent on purchasing 32 lifts for Hiyaa towers, part of an ongoing project to install additional lifts at the towers.

Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed provided the details during a session of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee yesterday in response to a question from Abdul Ghafoor, the Hanimadhoo MP for the main opposition party, MDP.

He explained that the total cost of the 32 lifts for Hiyaa towers amounted to USD 18 million, with installation work currently underway.

“USD 18 million was spent to purchase all the lifts for Hiyaa towers. The work is ongoing,” Fazul stated.

The installation of additional lifts at the Hiyaa towers, part of Hulhumale’ Phase II, is a key electoral pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The project, awarded to China’s Shenyang Yuanda Intellectual Industry Group in February, involves the installation of lifts across 16 towers. Physical work on the project began in April, and HDC has previously stated that it is expected to be completed by next year, after which the new lifts will be fully operational.
