Members of the Island Farmers Forum (IFM) in Vaikaradhoo, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, have established eight new greenhouses on the island.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare confirmed that the greenhouses were funded through the “Dhanduveringe Manfaa” matching grant scheme, under the Ministry’s Maldives Agribusiness Programme (MAP).
Fifty percent of the construction costs were covered by MAP. The Ministry stated that the greenhouses have successfully produced cucumbers and melons.
The Maldives Agribusiness Programme is a collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). It aims to advance the agricultural sector through various initiatives, including training and support for farmers.
The programme is implemented across 26 islands in Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, and Shaviyani Atolls. Previously, greenhouses were established in 12 northern islands, alongside training programmes on cultivating cucumbers, melons, chilli, and capsicums in greenhouse settings.
The initiative seeks to promote modern agricultural practices, provide technical training, and support local farmers in enhancing productivity.
