Motorised and battery-powered vehicles will be temporarily banned in Malé and Hulhumalé on the evening of Eid al-Adha, which falls tomorrow.

The ban will be in effect across all roads in the Greater Malé area between 16:00 and 18:00.

The Malé City Council announced that this measure is part of the city’s efforts to mark Eid al-Adha. Vehicles that may be required for emergency purposes will be granted special exemptions through a permit system. These permits can be obtained from the Council’s Public Service Affairs Department, located at Thaisey Koshi, during two designated time slots on Friday: from 08:30 to 10:30 and from 14:00 to 15:45.

The Council has stated that any individual found operating a vehicle in violation of the ban during the restricted hours will face penalties.

Eid al-Adha, one of the most significant religious festivals in Islam, will be celebrated nationwide on Friday, with Hajj Day falling on Thursday. This year, national Eid celebrations will take place across three islands: HA. Kelaa, K. Guraidhoo and L. Gan.

In addition to the events planned on these islands, the Ministry of Local Governance has announced that festive lighting will be displayed on 65 islands throughout the Maldives. This includes 29 islands that were lit last year and 36 that were illuminated during Eid al-Fitr earlier this year.

Since assuming office, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has prioritised the observance of Islamic holidays, including Eid, with public festivities. Under his administration, Eid has been celebrated on a larger scale in Malé and across the islands.
