Velana International Airport’s new Passenger Terminal 1 has begun serving Beijing Capital Airlines, making it the first Chinese airline to operate from the terminal and the fifth overall.

A ceremony was held to mark the milestone, attended by former CEO and Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Adhil Moosa, who now serves as CEO of Treetop Hospital.

Beijing Capital Airlines inaugurated its check-in counters at Terminal 1 and distributed gift bags to the 248 passengers departing on its first flight. The inaugural service, flight JD455-6, was welcomed with a ceremonial water salute, followed by traditional cultural performances as 276 passengers disembarked.

Beijing Capital Airlines, a low-cost carrier based at Beijing Daxing International Airport, joins Maldivian, Air Arabia, Beond, and Fitz Air in operating from the new terminal. MACL has also announced that two additional airlines are expected to shift their operations to Terminal 1 later this week.
