Velana International Airport (VIA) handled a total of 34,573 tonnes of cargo during the first six months of this year, according to the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).

Imports accounted for 25,262 tonnes, while exports reached 2,432 tonnes in the same period.

Transshipment cargo amounted to 6,879 tonnes, consisting of 5,621 tonnes of air-to-air cargo and 1,258 tonnes of air-to-sea cargo. This marked a 12 percent increase compared to previous figures.

Afcom facilitated the largest volume of goods, operating 112 freighters, followed by Fly Vaavu with eighteen freighters. MJets and Qatar Cargo also contributed to the cargo transport at VIA.

The airport’s role in global cargo connectivity is expected to further strengthen MACL’s contribution to the Maldivian economy. MACL remains committed to providing comprehensive, safe, and secure services to customers in line with international standards.

The new cargo terminal, inaugurated last year, was developed to support a wider range of services. While the previous terminal had a capacity of 50,000 tonnes, the new facility can handle up to 120,000 tonnes.
