Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has concluded an official visit to Hawaii, United States, strengthening the Maldives’ role in global climate action and expanding vital international partnerships.
He arrived in Honolulu last Thursday at the invitation of the Blue Planet Alliance (BPA), marking a significant step forward in the Maldives’ international climate diplomacy. Vice President Latheef delivered a keynote address at the opening ceremony of the BPA Fellowship Programme, calling for transformative thinking and innovative solutions to confront the global climate crisis.
In his speech, the Vice President underlined the urgent challenges faced by small island developing states (SIDS), such as the Maldives, where climate change already impacts communities and ecosystems in profound and irreversible ways.
A key highlight of the visit was the signing of a non-binding agreement between the Maldives and BPA, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to expanding renewable energy deployment. The ceremony took place during the Fellowship Programme’s inauguration, cementing a growing partnership dedicated to sustainable development and climate resilience.
Vice President Latheef was accompanied by Ali Shareef, the Maldives’ Special Envoy for Climate Change. Senior government officials, utility representatives, and civil society participants from the Maldives also joined the fourth cohort of the BPA Fellowship Programme, reinforcing the country’s active role in global sustainability initiatives.
