China’s Ambassador to the Maldives, Kong Xianhua, highlighted the China–Maldives Friendship Hospital in Vilimalé as part of Beijing’s ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare cooperation with the Maldives.

The project, supported by the Chinese government, is planned as a modern tertiary-level hospital offering outpatient services, emergency care, diagnostics and inpatient treatment. Ambassador Kong said in a statement that the facility aims to expand medical services in the Maldives and strengthen local healthcare capacity.

Kong noted that while construction is still in its early stages, the initiative also includes professional exchanges, medical personnel training, and technical cooperation, which together aim to enhance expertise and the quality of healthcare available locally.

He said China’s approach to healthcare—viewing it as a public service rather than a commercial privilege—has guided its international cooperation. The ambassador highlighted China’s own system, which combines basic medical insurance, critical illness coverage, and medical assistance to reduce the financial burden of illness on families.

“This model demonstrates the importance of protecting people’s sense of security and dignity,” Kong said, adding that development should focus on practical needs and improving livelihoods, not only economic growth.

He emphasised that building a robust healthcare system is a gradual process, but initiatives like the Friendship Hospital provide tangible benefits by expanding access to quality medical services for Maldivians.

The hospital project reflects a broader philosophy of cooperation, he said, prioritising projects that strengthen public services, support social well-being, and build long-term resilience in partner countries.
