The 112-bed Vilimale’ Hospital, funded through Chinese assistance, is set to be temporarily relocated to facilitate the construction of a new hospital on the same site.
In a ceremony held yesterday, the Ministry of Health officially handed over the Aman Hiyaa building in Vilimale’ to the Malé City Group of Hospitals. This relocation allows the current hospital premises to be vacated for the development of the China-Maldives Friendship Hospital—a 100-bed tertiary care facility.
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure signed an agreement with the Government of China to begin the design phase of the project. The initiative was first announced in January 2023 during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to China. This project is fully funded with grant assistance from China.

In March 2024, the government confirmed that land had been allocated for the hospital in Vilimale’, with construction expected to begin following the completion of technical preparations.
President Muizzu has emphasised improving healthcare access as a key priority of his administration. The new hospital is expected to reduce the need for Vilimale’ residents to travel to Malé for essential medical services.
