Voting is underway in the ruling party People’s National Congress (PNC), primary election, as the party selects candidates for next year’s Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) Elections.
Polling opened at 9am and will close at 4pm. The party has recorded strong participation, with 298 members competing for PNC tickets across 42 constituencies. The primary will determine candidates for 84 council seats.
PNC said that some candidates will contest the local council elections without facing a primary. Details of these uncontested candidacies have been published on the party’s online portal.
The party opened applications to contest in the primary on 1 December.
The party’s Parliamentary Group (PG) leader, MP for Inguraidhoo Ibrahim Falah, said previously that party membership has grown ahead of the local council elections, claiming total membership now exceeds 70,000. However, figures published by the Elections Commission place PNC membership at 68,665.
