Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef departed for an official visit to Hawaii, USA, last Thursday, at the special invitation from the Blue Planet Alliance.
During his upcoming visit to Hawaii, the Vice President of the Maldives will formally announce the country’s entry into the Blue Planet Alliance. He will also deliver a keynote address at the Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Programme ceremony and participate in several related events.
The Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Programme provides a platform for policy experts, utility executives, civil society organisations, and climate-solution advocates to collaborate on overcoming the challenges of implementing renewable energy technologies in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Senior government officials and representatives from Maldivian civil society organisations will participate actively in the programme. This fourth fellowship cohort will occur in Honolulu, Hawaii, from 18 to 23 May 2025.
Established in 2020, the Blue Planet Alliance champions the global transition to renewable energy by empowering islands and countries through capacity building and partnerships with financial institutions to mobilise funding. Its core mission is to secure legislative commitments for 100 percent renewable energy adoption by 2045.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has set an ambitious target for the Maldives to generate 33 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2028. To achieve this, the government has developed a comprehensive roadmap and launched several supporting initiatives. So far, the country has installed 68 MW of solar PV, with more projects currently in the pipeline.
