VP Latheef Highlights Maldives’ Social Development Priorities at WSSD2

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has concluded an official visit to Doha, Qatar, where he attended the Second World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2) and delivered a plenary statement reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to global social progress through inclusivity, equity, and resilience, highlighting national efforts in healthcare, education, digital transformation, and climate resilience.

VP Latheef also outlined initiatives to convert debt into tools for building resilience and called for reforms to the global financial system to enable greater investment in people. He emphasised the country’s holistic approach to social development, covering accessible housing, youth empowerment, women’s participation, disability inclusion, and universal healthcare and pensions.

The summit, held from 4 to 6 November, brought together heads of state, international organisations, civil society, and the private sector to renew commitments to social progress, poverty eradication, and inclusion under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Vice President’s visit underscored the Maldives’ dedication to international cooperation for building inclusive and sustainable societies.
