VP Returns from Official Visit to Spain for International Development Conference

Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has returned to Malé following the official visit to Spain to attend the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4), held in Seville.
During the visit, the Vice President participated in several high-level engagements. He delivered his plenary statement during the opening segment of the conference and gave the keynote address at Multi-Stakeholder Round Table 6: ‘Reforming the International Financial Architecture and Addressing Systemic Issues’. In his remarks, he emphasised the urgent need for global financial reform, advocating for inclusive representation of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), debt sustainability, and fairer credit rating systems.
The Vice President also took part in Maldives-led side events, where he highlighted key government initiatives aimed at building a resilient economy. These included the introduction of Coral Reef Insurance and the prioritisation of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), especially those led by youth and women.
In addition, he joined the side event “Debt Sustainability Support Service” alongside the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, His Excellency Gaston Browne, where he reaffirmed the Maldives’ strong support for the SIDS Debt Sustainability Support Service.
He also attended official dinners hosted by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain, and the Prime Minister of Spain.
Senior government officials from the Maldives participated in a range of high-level sessions throughout the conference, which ran from 30 June to 3 July 2025.
