The government has announced that walk-in interviews will be held to recruit drivers for the new government taxi line, aimed at addressing difficulties faced by the public in securing taxi services.

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), responsible for establishing the taxi line, confirmed that the interviews will take place from 10am to 6pm on Saturday at the Maafannu Bus Terminal.

MTCC had previously announced in November that it was seeking 407 drivers and received 366 applications. The company has not yet disclosed how many applicants have been hired.

The introduction of the government taxi line comes in response to challenges faced by the public in obtaining taxis, despite approximately 1,500 vehicles currently being registered. Initially, 100 taxis will be brought into service, including vehicles capable of navigating narrow streets.

The new taxi line will feature electric vehicles (EVs) and operate through a dedicated application, offering a service similar to ride-hailing platforms such as Uber and Grab.
