WAMCO Expands Services to Himmafushi
Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) officially launched its services in Himmafushi on Monday, marking another milestone in the expansion of the national waste management programme.
The service was inaugurated by the President during an official tour of Kaafu Atoll, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving waste management infrastructure across the Maldives. A senior WAMCO official confirmed that recruitment efforts are currently underway, with practical waste collection operations expected to commence within 10 days.
WAMCO’s services are gradually being extended beyond Malé City to other atolls. Earlier this year, the corporation introduced waste management services in Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi and Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo.
The national programme, “Magey Saafu Raajjee” (My Clean Maldives), forms a key part of the Week-14 roadmap, focusing on scheduling, announcing, and implementing waste management projects nationwide. The initiative’s primary aim is to establish sustainable and environmentally friendly waste management systems, including the development of eco-friendly waste disposal centres and enhanced waste transportation networks linking regional centres with islands.
Additionally, the programme emphasises education and training, offering awareness campaigns and workshops to promote safe waste management practices at both local and regional levels.
WAMCO’s expansion efforts align with broader national goals to ensure cleaner and healthier environments across the Maldives while addressing pressing waste management challenges in a sustainable manner.
