WAMCO Launches Resort Waste Collection Service in Noonu Atoll

MV+ News Desk | September 12, 2024

The Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has officially launched its Resort Collection Service in Noonu Atoll, starting with Noku Maldives.

Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim, stated that the service was introduced due to resorts failing to manage waste disposal effectively. He noted that the issue primarily arose from contractors’ inability to properly transport waste to designated beaches or transfer stations as required.

In response, WAMCO has taken over waste collection responsibilities for resorts, having already initiated the service at three resorts in Raa Atoll. The agreement with Noku Maldives marks the expansion of the service into Noonu Atoll. WAMCO’s Managing Director, Shaheed Ibrahim, represented the company during the signing of the agreement.

WAMCO now collects waste from resorts in both Noonu and Raa Atolls, transporting it to the waste management facility in Vandhoo, Thaa Atoll. The company is actively pursuing further agreements with resorts, offering one-year contracts and various service packages.

WAMCO expects its resort waste collection services to become a significant revenue source, with a target of servicing 50% of Maldivian resorts by mid-next year.
