WAMCO Offers Free Garbage Disposal For 3 Days to Tackle Street Dumping
Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has stepped in to address the mounting issue of street dumping in Male City and Hulhumale by providing free garbage disposal services to the public for three days.
In a recent announcement, WAMCO revealed that households can avail themselves of this service until Wednesday, 11:59 pm, with waste accepted at designated waste transfer stations in Male, Hulhumale, and Villimale at no cost.
However, WAMCO highlights the free disposal offer excludes wet waste (such as food and debris) and construction and demolition waste.
The waste transfer station service will commence today at 2:00 pm, coinciding with the start of Ramadan.
During the free disposal period, there will be no entry fee or disposal charge for public garbage vehicles. However, businesses can dispose of their waste at the existing entry fee of MVR 150 and a charge of MVR 0.75 per kg. Additionally, government institutions and commercial waste collection service providers will be subject to a charge of MVR 2.66 per kg as per current regulations.
This initiative comes as WAMCO aims to address the surge in street dumping, which has resulted in dilapidated furniture and household items cluttering pavements and sidewalks across the city. In conjunction with WAMCO’s efforts, the city council and Housing Development Corporation (HDC) are also actively working to clear garbage from the streets.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has urged the public to refrain from littering the streets, emphasizing the importance of responsible waste disposal practices.
