The Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has reversed its earlier decision to integrate waste collection fees with electricity bills in the atolls.
According to the corporation, the decision was made following a recommendation from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. WAMCO stated that waste collection fees will now be billed separately, billed only for customers who are registered for its services. Payments can be made through WAMCO offices on the islands or via the AvasPay application.
In Malé, WAMCO has been integrating waste collection fees with STELCO electricity bills since April 2023. This arrangement has reportedly facilitated timely payments and provided financial relief to the corporation.
Before the integration, WAMCO had been providing garbage collection services to approximately 53,000 households in the Malé area. However, only 20,000 households were paying for the registered services, prompting the move to tie the fees to electricity bills.
Despite these measures, WAMCO highlighted the ongoing financial challenges it faces in delivering essential waste management services at affordable rates.
