The Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) has issued a warning of potential legal action against state-owned enterprises (SOE) and their subsidiaries for the improper disposal of official documents, in contravention of established laws.

In an official statement released yesterday, PCB cited the National Archives Act, emphasising that state institutions and state-owned enterprises are obligated to notify the director general of the national archives when intending to dispose of official documents, photographs, charts, records, or sensitive information.

The PCB further stressed that any such disposal must be conducted in strict adherence to the law.

This announcement follows an incident involving Fuel Supplies Maldives (FSM), a subsidiary of the State Trading Organization (STO), which was found to have disposed of official documents without prior consultation with the director general of the National Archives.

A video, subsequently shared on social media platforms, showed the company placing stacks of documents into a cement mixer.

In response to the situation, the National Archives has indicated its intention to lodge a formal complaint with law enforcement authorities regarding this matter. FSM, on the other hand, argued that the documents depicted in the video were outdated and held no utility.
